I’m putting real time into security automation and I’m curious where it can actually take me. What career paths open up once you get good at this, and how can this community help me grow into them? Would love to hear where others have taken these skills.
Security automation skills are increasingly valuable because they sit at the intersection of security knowledge and engineering thinking, which is a combination a lot of teams need but struggle to hire for. Depending on where you want to go, these skills can take you in several directions: deeper into security operations and detection engineering, into security architecture roles where you’re designing how systems work together, into automation or platform engineering more broadly, or into consultancy and solutions work where you’re helping other organizations build out their automation practices.
What tends to set people apart isn’t really just knowing a specific tool, but understanding how to break down a manual process, identify what can be automated, and build something reliable around it. That’s a transferable skill, regardless of which platform you’re working in.
As for the community, the most useful thing is seeing how other people approach real problems. The patterns and tradeoffs people share here are often more practical than what you’ll find in formal training, and asking questions about approaches you’re considering is a good way to pressure-test your thinking before you build!
