How do I prompt for specific UI and UX?

I’m building something with a frontend and I want more control over how it actually looks. When I ask 3B to create an interface, how do I prompt for specific UI and UX choices, like a particular color, background, layout, or font? I’m curious how detailed I should get and whether there’s a knack to describing visual results in words. Any tips on phrasing prompts so the design comes out closer to what I have in mind would be great.

Getting the design you want mostly comes down to being specific and concrete. Tines 3B works well with plain-language direction, so the more precisely you name a visual choice, the closer the result will be to what you had in mind.

A few things that help:

  • Name exact values. “A dark slate background (#1e293b) with white text and a single teal accent” will get you much further than “make it modern and clean.”
  • Describe layout in structural terms. Say where things go: “a fixed left sidebar for navigation, main content in a centered column, cards in a three-column grid.”
  • Reference something concrete. Pointing at a familiar style, like “similar to a Stripe dashboard,” gives it a clear target to aim at.
  • Call out fonts and spacing directly. “Use a serif font for headings, generous whitespace, rounded corners on buttons.”

You don’t need to specify everything up front, though. It’s usually faster to get a first version on the screen and then refine in small passes: “make the header sticky,” “tighten the spacing,” “swap the accent to orange.” Treat it as a conversation and adjust as you go, rather than trying to describe the whole design perfectly in one prompt.

One more shortcut: if you already have a reference, drop in a screenshot. That way 3B can get most of the way in one step, and you can adjust from there.
